Mirik is a relatively newly formed town whose existence came back less than 150 years. It gains popularity when British explored this area for hill station which could serve as the summer resort.

Before beautification of Mirik by Britishers, it was an area covered by dense forest which fell under the jurisdiction of Siliguri and Darjeeling territory under the reign of Kingdom of Sikkim(The Lepchas) and the Kingdom of Nepal during 16th Century and Mid 1800.

The most prominent of tourist spots in Mirik is the Sumendu Lake.Sumendu Lake of Mirik is the best place for having a nice fun time with your family. The lake, lies at its centre surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other and linked together by an arching footbridge called Indreni Pull (Rainbow Bridge). A 3.5-km-long road encircles the lake and is used for walks with the view of Kanchenjunga on the far horizon. The temple of Singha Devi or the Devi Sthan is on the west bank of the river and you have to take the bridge over the lake to get there, not only is it frequented by the pious but also the nature lovers. Other temples dedicated to Hanuman, Shiva and Kali Mata can also be visited there. Bokar Gompa is another place of religious importance.

The lake isn't for swimming, yet sculling is a fun movement here. The perspective of the aggregate of Mirik while sailing in this lake is very bewildering, and with the atmosphere so satisfying and delicate, getting a charge out of the town turns out to be even better. The angled scaffold is another fascination over this lake, and the flashing water amid the day is a significant pleasure to the eyes. The lake is circumscribed by Dhupi trees, and a garden roosted at its east bank is wonderfully made. The Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery also known as Bokar Monastery is one of the prominent Buddhist centers in the Mirik. The monastery is home to around 500 monks who participate in practicing and sustaining the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. It also serves as a school teaching the principles of Buddhism. The monastery has a monastic college named Shedra. Founded by kyabje Bokar Rinpoche in 1984, one of the main meditation guru of the Kagyu. The original intent was to create a small retreat centre, but at the requests of disciples and lay people Rinpoche began to accept monks for training. Over time the small retreat centre evolved to become the current monastery with two retreat center nearby and monastic college, a shedra.

The Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery is located on the top of a hill in Mirik valley. The magnificence and grandeur of the monastery is such that it is visible from the neighbouring hills. The divineness of the monastery with addition to the natural surroundings of the place is truly a sight to contemplate Gorgeousness. Bounded by the sumptuous greenery of the forests, the monastery stands firm, thereby declaring its resplendence. The monastery is red in colour. Henceforth, one can imagine the majesty of the place.
